B12 - Pleyto School site

B12 - Pleyto School site - Even though Pleyto was miles away, it was the nearest Post Office so that's how this school got its out-of-context name. Under the oak trees is the "teacherage" house where a home was provided for whomever was the teacher. One key job qualification: the teacher was required to have several kids of her own in order to keep the classroom census high enough to warrant a public school. A new building was erected in the 50's, a few years before the school was combined with the Lockwood schools and moved to the Lockwood Valley. Sometimes the kids from Hesperia School would hike down here and have lunch with the kids in Bryson Valley's Pleyto School, then hike back--a 5+-mile round trip, mostly uphill headed home. And kids nowadays complain if they have to walk a block! (35.81412965, -121.0898639)
